Month: February 2018

Active Monitoring of Three Cities in New Zealand has started monitoring three locations in New Zealand:  New Pymouth, Nelson, and Westport.  Nelson is in the projected path of Gita and New Plymouth and Westport are North and South of the proposed track, respectively.

This will be interesting as I can gather data points from multiple locations in the storm simultaneously.

Gita has reduced to Tropical Storm status.  The largest threats to the island nation will be storm surge in the coastal areas and flash floods from the mass of water running down the hills.

New Plymouth is experiencing a steady 30+ mph wind and the other cities are not as bad, at about 10 mph.

Still, send up a prayer for the Solomon Islands, Tonga and the surrounding island nations.

2018 Feb 18 - Gita Track and Proposed Landfall in New Zealand

Gita Tracking Map
2018 Gita Tracking Map as of Feb. 17

I pray that the island nations of the Coral Sea survived what we Americans would deem a Category 3 and 4 hurricane.

The storm is gearing up for another landfall in the middle of New Zealand. It doesn't look like it will be more than a heavy tropical storm as it makes landfall. However, heaving rain and significant flash floods are being braced for as Gita is going to drop considerable precipitation on the mountains of the island nation.
